Mountaineer Week
Nov 13, 2019

Each year, West Virginia University holds “Mountaineer Week,” which is a weeklong celebration created to pay tribute and honor West Virginia’s heritage and traditions. This year’s events kick off on Friday, November 1 and continue through Saturday, November 9. All events and activities are located at WVU’s Mountainlair on the Downtown Campus or at specific areas of the Evansdale Campus. The events are meant to educate WVU students and generate awareness amongst the surrounding community about the culture that has made our state, as well as Mountaineer Country, what it is today.
Kicking off Mountaineer Week is the Mountaineer Week Craft Fair and Quilt Show from 12:00pm to 8:00pm in the Mountainlair Ballrooms. The craft fair and quilt show has been a tradition of Mountaineer Week since 1972. A focus was placed on traditional crafts made by those who settled in Appalachia. Some of the crafts that will be highlighted at the event include spinning, woodcarving, early American basketry, cornhusk dolls, pottery, leather crafts, blacksmithing, dulcimer making, and quilts.

If you’re walking by the Mountainlair, stop by for the apple butter stirring and corn roast, or pick up some kettle corn, pork rinds, and funnel cakes all week long!
Other Mountaineer Week events include an Apple Butter Demonstration by Mullins Orchard, Pepperoni Sampling, Coffee and Conversation: “Mountaineers are Always Free” presented by WVU Press, the Beard Growing Contest, the famous PRT Cram, and more!
Don’t forget: WVU’s next football game is on Saturday, November 9 at Noon against Texas Tech! Get the latest game day guide for the season and check out tailgating tips before you go!
With plenty of fairs and yummy food, as well as numerous activities, Mountaineer Week also holds several music events for students and visitors to engage in such as an Old Time Music Concert, and tunes by the Emerald Hills Band, Friends of Looman’s Legacy and more!
On Saturday, November 2 from 3:00 to 5:00pm, head to E. Moore Hall for WVU Tellabration! Watch five members of the West Virginia Storytelling Guide perform live, in a show that is sure to delight and captivate!
